AN AFFAIR OF THE HEART

A very important focus for Royal Phuket Marina is the active support of local community and charity projects. In the past few years RPM has built a Health Centre, made several donations to various other charities on the island and supported the Government Schools in the locality to provide them with the necessary equipment for their day to day operations.

Very recently the plight of 2 young boys have come close to our hearts Khun Puek (Age 7) & Khun Somkiet (Age 9). Khun Puek has been lying in a Phuket hospital for three years, having been abandoned by his parents. He went into hospital at the age of three to have a cyst removed from his lung and suffered brain damage during the operation. His mother did not want the responsibility of taking care of him after the operation and as a result he was left in the hospital care.

The other young boy, Khun Somkiet suffers from Epilepsy and has to have medication twice a day. His family live in impoverished conditions and have encountered many hardships over the years. Not long ago Khun Somkiet suffered a seizure while playing with his brother in a stream. His younger brother ran for help but by the time his mother returned he had nearly drowned. We don’t know the extent of his brain damage but he has been attending the Bangkok Phuket Hospital for physiotherapy sessions to re-teach him important life skills and in a short period of time he is able to stand and take small steps. He will now move to another Hospital to start more advanced courses and will require treatment for many years to come.

The 4Kali.org Foundation (www.4kali.org) have been taking care of Khun Somkiet under their “Support-a-child Program”. It was only this year that they found Khun Puek in the Takuapa Hospital, when they were visiting another child.

Royal Phuket Marina are now working with 4Kali.org Foundation and their "Support-a-Child" programme to take over the care of these 2 boys.

MY STORY

In May this year, I personally had the privilege of arranging a wedding at a 5 star resort in Phuket. The guests were advised not to buy wedding gifts for the bride and groom but asked to bring a "LOVE BOX" for the abandoned children in Phuket. We chose the Phantasanja Community Foundation near Khao Lak. On the morning of the wedding the bride and groom invited 20 of the children to visit their villa. The children enjoyed clowns, face painting, games and a sumptuous lunch. The children were then given their LOVE BOX by each of the wedding guests. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I can remember and I know that every guest at that wedding was touched. The children spent the remainder of the day playing with their toys, swimming, running in the sand and visiting the turtle sanctuary. We know it will be one of those magical moments in their lives.

RPM DONATES TO LOCAL SCHOOL

On the 11th of June this year, Khun Prasert the Director of Human Resources, Jeanette Skelton, PR & Events and Khun Tor, Human Resources, visited Baan Bangkoo School in the Kohkaew area, very close to the marina, to donate four ceiling fans for the classroom of the primary students.

The school is a Government School with 250 students from the surrounding area. Royal Phuket Marina has future plans to support the school in their requirements.

DONATIONS
